A Petroleum Engineer is involved in all the stages of oil and gas field assessment, growth and manufacture. The purpose is to ensure maximum output at the minimum cost while reducing the environmental impact.
There are different groups of Petroleum engineers like Petroleum Geologists, Reservoir Engineers, Production Engineers and Drilling Engineers.
The Petroleum Engineer should have excellent judgement skills and also good decision-making ability as he needs to ascertain the benefits of various actions and select the most appropriate one.
He should also have good critical thinking skills and problem solving skills as he needs to assess the different solutions to problems.
He should also be patient while listening to others and try to understand their viewpoints.
He should also possess good reading and writing skills so that he can effectively read the relevant documents and communicate with others successfully.
He should have good knowledge of mathematics and science to efficiently solve complex problems.
He should have excellent time management skills to regulate his own activities as well as others’.
A Petroleum Engineer’s prime task is to ascertain the feasibility of new drilling sites for extraction by estimating the economic value of the oil and gas wells. He should then look after the level of production and plan in such a way that the output is increased.
He should also be responsible for evaluating wells, well testing and well surveys.
He should help the engineering officers to solve problems occurring at the time of operations.
He is also required to maintain all the records of drilling and production operations. He also needs to write technical reports. He needs to discuss with the technical and scientific officials to restructure designs.
He delegates work to the staff and coordinates all the activities of workers involved in research, planning and development.
He also activates environmental controls on all the operations related to oil and gas extraction.
He manages the processes of installing mining and oilfield equipments and is also responsible for their maintenance. He takes samples to determine the amount and quality of oil, its exact location and the equipment required to haul it out.
He further overlooks the removal of drilling equipment and other apparatus and bringing them safely to land when the wells or pockets are exhausted.
A Petroleum Engineer generally needs to work on site for a week and then have a week off—he has to work alternate weeks. Those who work in offshore rigs or oil fields have 12 hour shifts. Experienced engineers may work in an office environment.
To be selected for the post of a Petroleum engineer, the candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering or a related field like Mechanical Engineering.
He should also have basic knowledge of computers and electronics.

Further, he should be able to concentrate on a task for a prolonged period of time without getting distracted.
