The person responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementation of artistic vision and focus of a theatre company is known as the artistic director. He generally reports to the chief administrative officer of the company. In some places both these positions are held by the sameperson.

Job description

A typical day in an artistic director’s job is as listed below –

  • He generally evaluates, hires, and supervises artistic personnel including stage managers, directors, performers, designers, etc.
  • He hires, evaluates, and supervises technical personnel also like production manager, and technical director.
  • He develops, evaluates, and implements programs for the whole year.
  • He develops annual program budget along with the chief administrative officer.
  • He acts as the spokesperson for his group.
  • He develops good relations with other cultural organizations.
  • He takes part in meetings, and joint activities with other organizations.
  • He reports directly to the board of directors on a regular basis.
  • He supervises the maintenance of written manuals for the technical and production team.
  • He directs at least 1 production in a year.

Job duties

Some of the important job duties are as following –

  • Has to layout the basic design or presentation approach, and specify style, and size of photographs, animation, graphics, video and sound.
  • He has to review and approve proofs of printed copy developed by staff member.
  • He has to work within budget, and manage own accounts, and projects.
  • He has to discuss client requirements, and presentation concepts with copy-writing, creative, art or production department heads.
  • He has to present final layouts for the clients’ approval.
  • By communicating with the clients he has to determine the objectives, budget, presentation styles, etc.

  • He must be able to manage his own time as well as of others.
  • He must have good comprehension skills.

Work environment

The work environment of an artistic director can be of the following types.

  • Most of the art directors work for the public relation firm or for an advertising agency.
  • Few of them work for newspaper agencies, and magazine publishers.
  • Some of them are hired in museums for art restoration work. In that case, they have to work inside museums.
  • They can work in art galleries also for supervising the restoration work of old paintings, and manuscripts.


The basic qualification required for becoming an artistic director is as follows –

  • They must have undergraduate degree in arts, fine arts, or in art history.
  • To reach high administrative positions they must have a bachelor degree in art administration or art management.
  • Having extra qualifications in marketing, advertising, business, or public relation will be an added advantage.
  • Having prior experience is a must.
